"AV & the Inner City" is an all-female soul/roots group which formed in the heart of Edmonton's Inner City. The diverse group of vocalists embrace the highs and lows of life on brand new, hymn-style single. In 2023 they were awarded an Emerging Artist Award based on their performances at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, despite not having a single recording to their name. Raine Hamilton is a resonant, acoustic chamber folk group with an otherworldly edge, and a lyric presence that cuts deep. Prism-clear vocals + strings, reaching out beyond the earthly. A classical violinist and musicologist by training, Raine and the string trio offer string- quartet-like arrangements of Raine’s original songs. They call this chamber-folk, a hybrid of the classical tradition of string quartet chamber music, with the singer songwriter folk that comes so naturally to Raine. Joined by cello and upright bass, expect string arrangements that push and pull, that move as they console.

Kateryna Kryvolap is exhibiting at the ACUA. Traditional Ukrainian decorative painting arose out of a folk art which was believed to have the magical power to protect from sorrow. Depictions of certain elements such as birds and flowers represented prosperity, harmony, and happiness. When creating decorative art, Kateryna dedicates her time to the extension of conventional boundaries by incorporation of techniques and styles of the past, adapting them to the trends and materials of the present. Balanced colourful compositions with attention to small details combined with sophistication, tell the viewer about the artist’s self-expression, creativity, and aesthetic taste. Since the perception of art is diverse, people of different nationalities and countries collect Kateryna’s original artwork not only for decoration purposes but in order to possess the new heritage of decorative art.

Dwayne Martineau: Boreal Fortress

Dwayne Martineau: Boreal Fortress

March 2, 2024 - August 4, 2024
11:00 am
Boreal Fortress uses images of trees, bark, weeds and detritus from our aspen parkland ecosystem that are made uncanny through mirroring techniques. This installation towers above Main Hall and its massive scale is designed to make the images of trees feel strange yet familiar. This cluster of trees suggests a secret passageway or a swirling vortex. However, this is an illusionistic fictional entryway into an elusive space that cannot be entered. This fortress gives a feeling of discovery but confronts viewers with a space they cannot enter and forces you to think about what we can and cannot access. Boreal Fortress evokes a sense of ancient connection to environmental knowledge that lays beyond the conscious mind.
Damian Moppett: Untitled Abstract Drawing in Space

Damian Moppett: Untitled Abstract Drawing in Space

March 17, 2020 - December 31, 2024
11:00 am
The Art Gallery of Alberta commissioned Canadian artist Damian Moppett to create an installation for long-term display in the AGA Atrium. This work is intended to be a scaled-up sketch that occupies the space in the AGA's atrium as if it was drawn in the air. Shapes and lines are fabricated out of cut aluminum plate, which have been arranged and painted to recreate a 'fast' artistic abstract drawing. Moppett's recent large-scale public sculptures have all been centered around the idea of making a relatively 'quick' drawing or painting into a large three-dimensional sculpture while still trying to convey the immediate graphic simplicity of the original drawing or painting. This work will maintain the qualities of a sketch with drawing materials and blow them up to architectural or larger-than-life scale.
