Another weekend, another opportunity to enjoy our amazing city! Here’s what’s on this weekend.

2023 Edmonton Jewish Film Festival | May 7–18

Hosted by the Jewish Federation of Edmonton, this festival invites audiences to discover, connect, and engage with Jewish stories, histories, and traditions. Through a combination of virtual and in-person screenings, there’s plenty of opportunities to enjoy these films! This weekend’s schedule includes a virtual event featuring Schächten, an Austrian film that follows a young Jewish businessman who witnesses the failed prosecution of a Nazi concentration camp commandant and takes matters into his own hands. The festival will also be offering in-person screenings next week so make sure to check out their website for a full schedule!

Theatre, Theatre, and more Theatre! | Various

Avid theatregoers and newbies rejoice–Edmonton’s stages are buzzing with activity this weekend! There’s so many shows to explore this weekend, including The Citadel Theatre’s Prison Dancer, an inventive new musical based on a viral video from 2007, when 1,500 inmates in a Philippines prison danced to Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

This weekend is also your last chance to catch some amazing shows by local theatre companies, including Shadow Theatre’s 10 FuneralsPunctuate Theatre’s The First Métis Man of OdesaWalterdale Theatre’s The Penelopiad, and Theatre Network’s Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes. With so many options, there’s something on stage for everyone! Don’t miss out on any of these amazing shows.

Rock out at The Yardbird Suite | Various

Do you like jazz? If so, head down to The Yardbird Suite to delight in nationally recognized musicians and newcomers alike! This weekend’s lineup includes the Brandon Issak Trio, The Marco Claveria Project, and an emerging artist showcase with local band SOUR.

Mother’s Day Events | May 14

Whether you’re looking to treat Mom to brunch, tea, or an exciting event, there’s plenty to do in Edmonton this Mother’s Day! Both The Art Gallery of Alberta and TELUS World of Science are offering free admission to mothers, the Hazeldean Market is hosting a Mother’s Day edition of their event, and the EdMetro Chamber Choir is celebrating the women of Broadway with a special concert. Plus, Edmonton’s best restaurants are offering some delicious brunch specials for the perfect start to this special day. Find more Mother’s Day events here.

Symphony for Kids: Charlot @ Mlle Cello | May 13

This concert is fun for the whole family! Paying homage to the iconic Charlie Chaplin, join the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra for this pantomime concert which follows Charlot and Mademoiselle Cello who are united by a love for music. Make sure to show up early to enjoy some family-friendly activities in the lobby!

University of Alberta Botanic Garden | various

This stunning attraction is officially open for the season! The University of Alberta Botanic Garden offers 240 acres of flora and fauna to explore including the peaceful Kurimoto Japanese Garden and the stunning Aga Khan garden. There’s no better way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Plus, on Mother’s Day, the first 300 visitors will receive a potted pansy seedling!

Stars On Ice | May 13

Witness the world’s most accomplished and artistically gifted champions of figure skating at Rogers Place this weekend! Icons like Patrick Chan and Kurt Browning will be performing soul routines and then teaming up for stunning group routines. This is figure-skating unlike anything you’ve seen before! There’s still tickets left, so grab them while you can!
