Located about 30 minutes north of Edmonton along Highway 28A, the town of Gibbons is home to plenty of breathtaking nature and family-friendly attractions. Whether you’re heading out to the nearby Jurassic Forest or looking for some day-trip inspiration, you’ll find plenty to see and do.

1) Explore the Gibbons Cactus Prairie
That’s right, cacti! This modest area of parkland on the northwest side of the Sturgeon River Valley is the only known public place where you can find wild-growing cacti in the Edmonton region. Take a stroll through a stunning blend of rugged badlands and lush forest, and see if you can spot the Brittle Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia fragilis), the world’s northernmost cactus species.

2) Grab a slice at Sal’s Famous Gibbons
This beloved local restaurant offers a wealth of tasty options that the whole family will love. Try one of their unique gourmet pizzas, like Cajun’d Chicken, Taco, or Tour of Italy—or make your own! Other menu options include build-your-own calzones, hearty slabs of lasagna, and a full array of beef and chicken burgers, including the Gyro Burger topped with donair meat.

3) Discover the past at The Gibbons Museum
Open annually from the beginning of June to the end of August, the Gibbons Museum consists of 6 historic buildings that have been lovingly maintained and moved to one central location. Visit an old-fashioned general store, a log cabin, a family farm, and more! You can also enjoy ice cream, ice cream floats, and freeze pops on site or in the surrounding Oliver Park.

4) Walk the trails of Echo Glen Park
With over 2 km of riverside walking trails, outdoor cooking stoves, and an annually-stocked trout pond, there’s lots of space for adventure at Echo Glen Park! Enjoy gorgeous views of the Sturgeon River Valley, with tall forests and peaceful meadows, while still being right next door to downtown Gibbons.

5) Enjoy a picnic lunch at the Centre Park Gazebo
Centre Park is located right in the heart of downtown Gibbons, and features a playground as well as a memorial for victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Its proximity to nearby restaurants makes it ideal for enjoying picnics and takeout lunches, including in the beautiful Centre Park Gazebo.
