CSO’s Winter program brings Sibelius’ expansive Symphony No. 7. In this work, the composer finds in the concept of totality (Gestalt) the path to his creation. The music of Sibelius 7 is a mature, emotionally packed 23-minute work that fuses the sectional symphonic form in one single movement.
Mozart’s Masonic Funeral Music provides a contrast against the massive forces of Sibelius’ work. Mozart’s masterpiece is introspective and contemplative. Its delicate texture bridges Gustav Holst’s less-known Japanese Suite. Holst’s Suite was inspired by Japanese folk themes and instrumental sounds: a reverent statement on the many musical treasures gifted by the Land of the Rising Sun: Japan.
