The World Cup Qualifiers are coming to Edmonton! Canada’s men’s soccer team, including Edmonton’s own Alphonso Davies (playing his first professional game in his hometown), will play against Costa Rica on Nov. 12 and against Mexico on Nov. 16. Despite the chilly weather, you can expect an action-packed night and a roaring crowd of over 50,000 fans as Canada rallies for their spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup™, to be held in Qatar. But the excitement won’t just be contained within the walls of the stadium. All around the city, you can find pre-game action, game-night hangouts at local restaurants, and delicious treats for watch parties at home!

Pregame Events

The Voyageurs are Canada’s ultimate soccer fans, whose cheering, drumbeats, and banners are mainstays of the game. They’re also running several events outside of game day; you can find a full list (as well as information on getting a Voyageur membership) on the Voyageurs’ website. Oh, and be sure to get your Canada Soccer apparel to show your team pride!

Where to Watch

If you’re up for braving the cold, the best place to catch the game is in-person at Commonwealth Stadium! Tickets are still available for both games; tickets for each game must be booked individually. You can get tickets for Nov. 12 here and for Nov. 16 here. You can also enjoy the games—and some delicious eats—at sports bars and restaurants around the city. Local favourites like 1ST RND and Local Public Eatery are the perfect place to cheer on the Canadian team with your fellow Edmontonians.

Party at Your Place

If you’re catching the game from your own couch, there’s plenty of ways to add to the festivities. Celebrate our guest teams’ home countries with delicious snacks from Paraiso Tropical, which is where you can find everything from Latin American groceries to fresh-made tamales, empanadas, and tacos. Looking for some game-day bevvies to go with your spread? Pick up everything you need for killer margaritas at El Beso! They offer premixed versions of the classic cocktail in both flavours like Watermelon, Guava, and Jalapeño. Just pour and enjoy!
