With a multidisciplinary festival, several exhibitions featuring local artists, and Edmonton’s hottest art party, this weekend is all about vibrant visual arts in our beautiful city! You can also check out a festival dedicated to a cappella, a new feature pyramid at the Muttart Conservatory, and a culinary festival highlighting 8 great restaurants in the Mill Woods area. The Space Between Stars | March 2–12

Experience a fresh new take on a classic story at SkirtsAfire festival this weekend. Their mainstage performance, The Space Between Stars, takes inspiration from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince. Follow an astronomer as she grapples with the memory of her precocious son. Combining projection, puppetry, and live actors, this show blends astronomy, cosmology, and mythology to craft a story unlike anything you’ve seen before. The mall @ Mitchell Art Gallery | Until April 1

Why are Edmontonians obsessed with West Edmonton Mall? Mitchell Art Gallery takes on this question in their latest exhibition The Mall. As described by their website, this exhibition “explore[s] the pleasures of experiencing this shopping paradise as much as they consider the exploitation indicative of capitalist overconsumption.” Featuring works by Vikky Alexander, Michelle Campos Castillo, ude Griebel, and others, The Mall is a thoughtful exploration of one of Edmonton’s most famous landmarks.

AGA Refinery: Go for Gold | March 4

Paint the town gold with the Art Gallery of Alberta. Featuring local artists, interactive art experiences, DJs, and inspired cocktails, the AGA is the place to see and been seen this weekend. This month’s event is inspired by all things gilded–the upcoming JUNOs and Oscar ceremonies, plus March Madness and other sports tournaments. Celebrate champions in all fields with this essential social event.

My Story of Sublimation @ SNAP | Until April 8

Exploring the mystery of changing states, Libby Hague’s My Story of Sublimation opens at the SNAP Gallery this weekend. Sublimation occurs when ice transforms directly into a gas. Taking inspiration from this unique disappearing phase, Hague uses woodcut installations and watercolour to stretch the viewer’s imagination to contemplate the other side of life. Join SNAP and Hague for an opening reception and artist talk on March 4th from 6:00pm–9:00pm.

Signs of Spring | March 4–April 16

The event you’ve been waiting for is finally here! The Muttart Conservatory’s annual bulb show opens in their feature pyramid this weekend. Signs of Spring showcases all your favourite colourful blooms from tulips to carnations, this vibrant showcase is the perfect way to get ready for warmer weather. While you’re there, make sure to explore the other pyramids, which contain over 700 different plant species.

When you purchase admission to the Muttart Conservatory, you can receive free admission to another great Edmonton attraction, the Edmonton Valley Zoo. Just show your receipt at the other facility and enjoy two experiences for the price of one! This promotion runs until March 31.

SING! Edmonton | March 3–5

Do you love all things a cappella? Then don’t miss SING! Edmonton! Shining the spotlight on the unique talents of both local and international a cappella groups, this festival will feature events that display the immense power of the human voice. Celebrate local artists at Artisanal A Cappella on March 3rd and laugh along to pop classics at Pop ‘N Laugh on March 4th. In my body by Crazy Smooth/BBoyizm | March 4

Featuring an intergenerational group of 9 dancers, In My Body offers a unique deep dive into the culture of hip-hop throughout the generations.
