Shows, sports, and the Year of the Tiger… here’s what’s on this weekend in Edmonton!

Festivals & Special Events

1) Lunar New Year | Jan. 29
Join in on free virtual activities such as Lion Dancing, storytelling, and traditional music ensembles to celebrate the Year of the Tiger! A limited number of craft packages are available at Kingway Mall’s Guest Services for the 2 pm virtual craft-making session. Be sure to catch the puppet show at 3:20 pm, suitable for all ages!

2) Ice on Whyte Festival 2022 | Jan. 27-Feb.6
Enjoy beautiful ice sculptures and live carvings done by some of Canada’s most skilled ice carvers! Don’t miss out on the Ice on Whyte Food Walk Tour. Choose from three tours, Tuesday to Sunday, that feature a guided walk-through of the Old Strathcona neighbourhood. You will get to indulge in a hot beverage, baked goods, and a brunch or dinner (depending on the tour you choose). Tickets for the walking tour are available for purchase online and include Ice on Whyte admission. The Restriction Exemption Program will be in effect for the whole festival.

3) Ice Grooves | Jan. 28-29
This weekend, skate your way around City Hall Plaza from 6-9 pm and put your moves to the test! An exciting lineup features DJ Busy on Friday and DJ Campos and DJ Hermanas on Saturday for Latin Night. Bring your own skates or rent them for free to set you up for a groovy night!

Concerts & Music

1) Laila Biali | Jan. 28
Laila Biali, singer-songwriter, pianist, and CBC Music national radio host takes to the stage at Yardbird Suite! This multi-award-winning artist mixes the sounds of jazz and pop for a unique showstopping experience. Among many nominations and awards, her most recent accomplishments include the 2019 JUNO Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year and the 2020 SOCAN Music Award. Her latest album, Out of Dust has been nominated for a 2021 JUNO Award. Tickets are available for purchase to join her live in person or online!

2) Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Edmonton Dinner Show | Until Jan. 30
Get ready for some food and musical fun at the Jubilations Dinner Theatre! Enjoy a three-course meal consisting of salad, a choice of dinner entrée, and two desserts while taking in some of the greatest hits by the best female pop artists of the ’80s.

3) UnCovered: The Music of Dolly Parton | Jan. 29
Kick off your shoes after a long day and enjoy your favourite Dolly Parton songs from the comfort of your own home! This virtual event will feature a selection of Dolly’s greatest hits, performed by some of the best Canadian artists such as Jully Black, Beau Dixon, Sara Farb, Hailey Gillis, Kelly Holiff, and Andrew Penner. Tune in at 8 pm! Tickets are available for purchase online.

On Stage

1) Burlesque Brew-ha-ha Show! | Jan. 28
Join some of Edmonton’s best burlesque performers at the Canadian Brewhouse in St. Albert! Your ticket purchase will include an individual charcuterie sampler and a welcome Dangle. This is an 18+ event.

2) Jason Kenney’s Hot Boy Summer: The Musical | Until Jan. 30
The year is 1983 and the student union president of Alberta University, Jason Kenney, plans to have the best hot summer party ever with the help of his frat, Upsilon Cappa Pi. This plan is challenged with the emergence of a mysterious infection. Catch the final run this weekend of this hilariously-crafted musical written by Byron Martin and Simon Abbot. Can Kenney handle the obstacles and still promise the best summer ever?

3) Dark & Dirty Show Feat. Kathleen McGee | Jan. 28-29
This stand-up comedian has an unapologetic, honest, and dark sense of humour that will have you shifting in your seat and laughing at the same time. Join her for a night to remember at Yuk Yuk’s Comedy Club located inside Century Casino. Tickets are available for purchase online.

4) Ed Hill | Jan. 29-30
Catch the hilarious Ed Hill at the Grindstone Theatre! His one-hour stand-up special, “Candy and Smiley,” was featured on Amazon Prime and he is ready to bring the laughs right to you for two nights straight. Grab your tickets! The show starts at 7 pm.

5) Improv at the Rapid Fire Theatre | Jan. 28-29
The Rapid Fire Theatre will be hosting not one, not two, but three different improv shows this weekend! On Friday, Theatresports will bring you some head-to-head improv action. On Saturday, CHiMPROV and the Late Night Double Feature Improv Show will give you a glimpse at some of the best improvisers that the Rapid Fire Theatre has to offer. Each show will bring you something different but you can count on all of them to bring you a night of smiles and laughter! Tickets for each show are available online.

Sports

1) Golden Bears Hockey | Jan. 28-29
Cheer on the Golden Bears as they take on the University of Calgary Dinos at Clare Drake Arena! Game days are back-to-back and the puck drops at 7 pm.

2) Edmonton Oil Kings Hockey | Jan. 29-30
This weekend brings back-to-back game days as the Edmonton Oil Kings face off with the Swift Current Broncos and the Lethbridge Hurricanes at Rogers Place!

3) MacEwan Griffins Men’s and Women’s Volleyball | Jan. 28-29
The MacEwan Griffins take to the court against the University of Calgary Dinos. The women and men play back-to-back for two nights of intense action at the Dr. David W. Atkinson Gymnasium.

4) MacEwan Griffins Men’s Hockey | Jan. 28-29
The MacEwan Griffins men’s hockey team plays Mount Royal University on home ice at the Downtown Community Arena, located within Rogers Place. Tickets are available at the MacEwan University Sport and Wellness Welcome Desk on any day of the week or on game day at the Downtown Community Arena.
