Edmontonians have long lobbied to have green onion cakes declared the city’s official food. They were even the subject of a 2018 historical study, when Edmonton’s then historian laureate Chris Chang-Yen Phillips set out to determine the dish’s roots once and for all.

Thanks to Chang-Yen Phillips, the green onion cake’s Edmonton origins have been traced back to 1978, when restaurant owner Siu To started serving them at Happy Garden and Mongolian Food Experience. The savoury scallion-filled pancakes were a huge success and quickly spread across the city through events like Folk Fest, the Fringe, and Taste of Edmonton. To this day, no festival experience is complete without a fresh green onion cake in hand.

Luckily, Hong Kong Bakery at Taste of Edmonton 2022 has you covered! This family-run business has operated in Edmonton’s Chinatown since 1986, where they stay close to tradition with handmade products using simple and natural ingredients. They specialize in authentic Chinese and Hong Kong style pastries and buns including BBQ pork buns, Chinese cakes, and macaroons.

Hong Kong Bakery have been participants in Taste of Edmonton for many years, so make sure to check out booth 11 for a slice of Edmonton history! Along with Green Onion Cakes, they will be serving Jian Bao (pan-fried pork buns) and Banana Crème Brûlée Tarts.
