Looking for a refreshsummer squeezeing drink to try while lounging on a patio or deck this summer? Local brewery Alley Kat has brewed up two refreshing seasonal craft beers that have become “patio mainstays” at bars and restaurants all over the city! Check Alley Kat’s website for a list of venues that serve these beers on-tap, or pick up a couple bottles at the brewery to take home and enjoy.

1. Summer Squeeze: No matter what the weather is outside, it tastes like summer in a glass! Made with hand-squeezed grapefruits, this medium-gold ale invokes notions of sitting in the sun with a light and citrusy — but not bitter — taste. It’s flavourful and refreshing, without an overwhelming too-sweet fruit flavour.

2. The Avenue: Alley Kat held a naming contest over Twitter, asking fans to come up with a name for their new white IPA — a type of beer that is much lighter in taste than regular IPAs (which are incredibly strong!) The winning suggestion? “The Avenue Whyte IPA”: a name that pays tribute to the famous, lively Whyte (82) Avenue in Edmonton’s Old Strathcona district, and a pun on the name the beer shares with the street. Beer Geeks: take note that a white IPA has the same flavourful hop character as a regular IPA, but is made with a wheat base in the style of a Belgian beer. If you dislike the taste of most IPAs, give this one a try — it’s flavourful and spicy but not too strong or bitter. Now this is a beer that truly embodies “local flavour”!
