Fun for the whole family can often put a dent in your wallet, but it doesn’t have to. We’ve rounded up a few exciting outings that won’t break the bank on February 17.

Royal Alberta Museum
Bring your fam to RAM and enjoy free admission from 10 am-5 pm. With towering ancient mammoths, hundreds of live bugs, and the hands-on Children’s Gallery, you’ll have no trouble keeping the whole family busy all day! Tip from the RAM: Due to the large crowds expected, please enter the museum through the East Entrance (on 97 street) and exit through the West Entrance (99 street), so any lineups will be indoors where it is warm.

Alberta Legislature
Celebrate with activities and entertainment for all ages and generations. Enjoy musical and magical entertainment by world-class performers, try out some crafts, games, and LEGO activities, and even enjoy free exhibitions and educational activities, including special screenings of Edmonton International Film Festival Family Shorts. A variety of food vendors will also be on-site. An annual tradition.

Rutherford House
Visit Rutherford House, a restored and furnished Edwardian-era home once owned by Alberta’s first premier. Explore the house, make an old-fashioned craft, and join the costumed interpreters in old-fashioned games. 11153 Saskatchewan Dr., 780-427-3995.

Fort Heritage Precinct’s Winterfest
The Fort Saskatchewan Historical Society is hosting Winterfest at the Fort Heritage Precinct from 11am-2pm. Come enjoy the activities (including maple syrup taffy, snow golf, dog sledding, and more) and visit the costumed interpreters in the NWMP Fort and Warden’s Residence for free. Please note: the event will be cancelled if temperatures reach -18C or lower. 10006-100 Ave., 780-998-1783.

City of Edmonton Reuse Centre
The creative and resourceful Reuse Centre hosts free drop-in activities for the whole family, including fun crafts, balloon animals, facility tours, and more. Plus, shop the store for amazing deals on board games, puzzles, books, movies, and craft supplies. 6835-83 St., 780-442-4380.

Rinks & Hills
Lace up your skates, and glide under the open sky at a free outdoor rink at the Alberta Legislature, Victoria Park Oval & IceWay, or Hawrelak Park. Or head to one of the city’s epic sledding hills found at Emily Murphy Park, Gallagher Park, or Government House Park. Visit the City of Edmonton website for updates on the conditions of city-maintained hills and rinks.

Edmonton Public Library
Visit your local library for afternoon games and events! Each EPL branch will have its own activities. This Family Day, go beyond the books and visit an EPL branch for drop-in games, classes, and activities, and your chance to win a Cineplex Family Prize Pack.
