Shumka means “whirlwind,” and this is a word that perfectly describes the legacy of this company. For over 60 years, Shumka has respected and acknowledged the origins of Ukrainian culture while recognizing the Canadian experience and contemporary expectations. This unique perspective has brought a distinct style to the Dancers, one that is a treasure throughout Canada. Enthralling shows of artistry and emotion come alive through their performances. Audiences from all backgrounds can see Ukrainian culture unfold before their eyes and see the power of dance and music as forms of storytelling and celebration.

Shumka on Tour will feature two new works. Mosquito’s Wedding is inspired by a traditional Ukrainian folk song. It celebrates diversity, overcoming stereotypes, acceptance, and love through a fairy-tale land of insects from different regions of Western Ukraine. The message? All we need is love. The second work is an adaptation of Shumka’s Echoes of Hopak and is the ultimate celebration of Ukrainian culture. The Hopak powerfully symbolizes the cultural pride of the Ukrainian diaspora—not to mention it is also the national dance of Ukraine.

Shumka’s most recent film project, Promise Land, is a tribute to the 130th Anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada and will premiere on the Tour. This film pays respect to Ukrainian ancestors who persevered through struggles and hardship for a better life in Canada. Audiences will have much to take in, especially given the current situation in Ukraine. The Tour will feature a dance tribute to the current conflict, reminding audiences to celebrate Ukrainian culture, now and forever. The strength of Ukraine as a nation will continue to be recognized, and displays of dance and music are powerful ways to lift souls. In support of humanitarian efforts, donations will be collected at each performance for Humanitarian Aid for Artists in Ukraine.

You can join in this powerful celebration on April 7 and 8. Tickets are available online.
