For one night only, the downtown streets of Edmonton will be filled with unique arts installations that will play with existing aspects of the downtown core. You may need to have an extra afternoon coffee to stay awake for it though — this evening of art runs from 7 pm – 4 am on September 26.
This late-night contemporary art party began in Paris in 2002, and has since occurred in cities all over the world. Over 30 one-of-a-kind installations will re-imagine the downtown core in exciting ways. At 11 pm, the cranes will move in a synchronized dance overhead that’s been choreographed by Toronto-based artist Brandon Vickerd. In one corner of Churchill Square, performance artist Kelly Mark will argue with a video projection of herself. In another corner, artists will attempt to install a 50-foot-tall bouncy castle.
A special installation of Yoko Ono’s Wish Tree will fill Churchill Square with 121 trees. Participants will be given special tags to writer a wish on and tie it to the branch of a tree. After the event, all of the wishes will be collected and sent to the Imagine Peace Tower in Iceland, and the trees will be planted in Edmonton communities.
On top of the interactive art installations, you can visit the Grand Night Market until 3 am on 102A Ave., between 100 St. & 102 St, for local great vendors and artisans. Or enjoy a midnight snack from a food truck located on 99 St. between 102A Ave. & 102 Ave.
