New Royal Albert Museum exhibit digs into a lost empire

In the heart of an ancient empire lies a tale waiting to be told, and this February, the world is invited to embark on an extraordinary journey through history. Angkor: The Lost Empire of Cambodia, an international feature exhibition, promises an immersive experience that unveils the secrets of one of the greatest empires the world has even known.

Angkor’s Majestic Legacy

Between the 9th and 15th centuries, Angkor’s dynamic blend of craftsmen, ruling class luminaries, and specialized priests contributed to the creation of enormous monuments and structures. Awe-inspiring temples, notably the towering Angkor Wat, once dominated vast cities constructed from wood, and colossal monuments to the gods stood as a testament to human ingenuity. The remnants of these cities have all but vanished, leaving behind a tapestry of history waiting to be unravelled.

Travel to the Past

The exhibition, on loan from Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, boasts a collection of 120 original objects and treasures from the UNESCO World Heritage Site and features cutting-edge technologies and immersive elements. Through the lens of science and discovery, you can marvel at the early symbolism encapsulated in relics and sculptures and delve deeper into the empire’s vast scope and remarkable achievements.

Become a part of the Angkor narrative with interactive activities that let you build a temple, touch ancient sculptures, and flex your archaeological detective skills. It’s not just a spectator sport; it’s an opportunity to be an active participant in the unravelling of Angkor’s mysteries.
