Old Strathcona is significant to the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Edmonton. Two of the Church’s first rented halls in the city were in Strathcona and so was its first purpose-built meetinghouse. Step back in time with Erik Backstrom for a lively discussion of how history, architecture and faith came together in one of Edmonton’s best-loved communities.

Starting with a quick dunk tank history lesson about the University. From there, touring the three original student residences, and then onward for a glimpse of the observatory and the Nano building. Next, the newest science building for a bit of a break indoors. Off to the second Power Plant and Triffo Hall, both heritage buildings following that. Finally, towards the LRT to have a look at St Stephen’s College and the major external renovations to the old Med Building.

Jennifer Berezan in Concert
Singer-songwriter Jennifer Berezan is an artist who called Edmonton home for a period of time and Alberta was central to her life during her formative years. While she eventually settled in Berkley California, which has been her home for a few decades, this gifted artist returns to Edmonton for a concert at the Cosmopolitan Music Society in the heart of Strathcona.

This concert includes a range of selections from Renaissance to Contemporary, Sanctuary to Stage. The line-up includes Magnificat by Lana Walter, Ubi Caritas by Ola Gjeilo, Mary Speaks by Daniel Gawthrop, plus a set of toe-tapping tongue twisters. Schubert's Unfinished Symphony
Barber’s whimsical Violin Concerto spotlights Concertmaster Robert Uchida with poetic music that will sweep you off your feet. It’s a mystery why Schubert left his eighth symphony unfinished, although one historian claimed, “He could never have finished it because nothing could approach the originality, power, and skill of the first two movements.” On the other hand, Beethoven wrote four different overtures for his one opera, of which the third is the most impressive, and most popular.

Watch the world premiere of Unir with Ballet Edmonton. The final piece for the 2023/24 season is choreographed by company dancer Connor McLeary. The idea of “struggle” is an overarching theme within this piece, exploring how personal struggle can manifest itself physically. The movement, the music and the minds of each Ballet Edmonton artist have played a part in how this work has evolved.

The spotlight of the festival shines on Ogboingba Tries to Change Her Fate by The Foundation’s ArtSpace Team, a new theatre work. This innovative production revitalizes a captivating folktale from the Ijaw people of Nigeria, immersing audiences in a tale where courage meets destiny. Witness as a courageous woman boldly confronts the creator, navigating a path of transformation and self-discovery.
The festival also features a diverse array of artistic showcases, including a vibrant visual art exhibit, and dynamic dance and soul-stirring poetry showcases. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in interactive workshops, providing accessible avenues for community members to engage with the arts. Some events are free of charge, ensuring inclusivity and welcoming all members of the community to experience the magic of the Jabulani Arts Festival firsthand.

Ante Meridiem (the Daytime Choir!), will perform a solo set as well as together with Vocal Alchemy: nearly 150 voices to raise the roof!

Diljit Dosanjh: Dil-luminati Tour
Punjabi music mogul Diljit Dosanjh announced his Dil-Luminati Tour, taking him to stadiums and arenas across North America this year.
Diljit will make history as the first Punjabi artist to headline both Canadian stadiums, BC Place and Rogers Centre. The Vancouver show is also expected to be the largest Punjabi performance outside of India, with BC Place having a building capacity of more than 54,000.
Dreamspeakers International Indigenous Film Festival

This year’s festival has over 40 films, filmmaker panels, an animation workshop and more. Each film was selected by our jury from over 200 entries. There are documentaries, shorts, features, animations, and films from seasoned professionals and first time directors. The films hail from all over the world including: Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, Chile, Japan, and for the first time, Iran. DIIFF will once again have both in person and online screenings.
