Experience the beauty of nature with Breathe Outdoors

by Mariah Hess

Something about the great outdoors is full of peace and serenity. Maybe it’s the escape from the busy city or the sweet smell of pine trees. Maybe it’s the sound of birds chirping and the calming sound of water flowing in a nearby stream. Whatever the source of tranquility, moments like these are for closing your eyes, inhaling through your nose, and exhaling through your mouth. And there’s the peace. This personal, intimate experience with nature is fundamental to the Breathe Outdoors brand. It’s a moment that everyone can experience—all you have to do is take a deep breath.

Breathe Outdoors has roots in its parent company, Northwest Tent and Awning, which opened over 100 years ago in 1921 on Jasper Avenue. In 1963, they became Campers Village, the name that probably rings a bell for most folks. Nearly 60 years later, Campers Village became Breathe Outdoors.

This change in brand sought to capture a better essence of company and customer values. The name “Campers Village” was limiting in representation—not all customers were looking to camp, and the store offered more than just camping products. “Breathe Outdoors” opens up the adventure possibilities beyond camping. Additionally, the act of breathing inspires spiritual, mental, and physical well-being, and this is an important focus of the new brand. It’s no secret that spending time outdoors has a positive impact on mental and physical health, and if the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that self-care is important. Breathe Outdoors wants to help folks turn to the outdoors for well-being, inspiration, and care.

Accessibility to the outdoors is also a fundamental value to the Breathe Outdoors brand. For them, the outdoors is for everyone, regardless of experience or ability. This is why they proudly partner with Easter Seals Alberta and Easter Seals Camp Horizon. Easter Seals Alberta fosters inclusion, independence, and recreation for individuals with disabilities and medical conditions through various programs and services. One such program is the Easter Seals Camp Horizon which provides a life-changing outdoor camp experience. This unique camp opportunity empowers campers by engaging them in activities that challenge their mind and body and promote independence. These folks learn new skills through fun experiences like tree-top traversing, rope courses, and rock climbing. Since 1998, Breathe Outdoors has donated more than $116,000 to Easter Seals Alberta. They also support the Easter Seals Paper Egg Campaign, where customers can donate $2 and write their name on a paper egg for the wall. Additionally, the “Toonies for Tents” program supports the Easter Seals Camp Horizon. For every tent sold, $2 will go towards sending someone to the camp.
