“Everything here is Japanese, except me,” quips our chef as he flips his utensils in the air. We’re watching him caramelize vegetables and chop meat on the grill in front of us. Everything smells so good it’s a struggle to wait for everything to cook properly.

The term “teppan-yaki” itself hints at the unique cooking experience you’ll find at Japanese Village. Derived from ‘teppan,’ the metal plate where the magic happens, and ‘yaki,’ meaning grilled, broiled, or pan-fried, this method offers more than just delicious food. The chef cooks right in front of you, showcasing not only culinary expertise but also adding an entertaining flair with tricks and theatrics. We specifically got the quintessential onion volcano complete with steam eruption, which even raised some oo’s and ah’s from the family next to us.

For drinks, we opted to sample some cocktails. The “Saké Caesar” offered a unique twist on the classic Caesar, featuring a deep and complex taste profile courtesy of fruity and floral saké. The “Miss Tokyo” was a standout though, and is low-key dangerous because you could easily drink several. This blend of lychee, pineapple, and cranberry set the tone for the evening.

The main act of our meal showcased the artistry of teppan-yaki cooking, also known as the “Chef’s Table.” The Teriyaki Beef featured thinly sliced AAA Canadian hip cut, generously glazed with Japanese Village’s own teriyaki sauce. Upon recommendation, we also tried the Canadian Rock Lobster tails, fresh from Nova Scotia and adorned with a rich and savoury Misonaise, similar to a hollandaise. Accompanied by Shabu Shabu Soup (egg drop soup), Village Green Salad, Rice, Yaki-shrimp sampler, and Hibachi Vegetables (including mushrooms, zucchini, and onions), it was a complete and satisfying meal. We even had enough for leftovers and got to enjoy a post-visit lunch.
